I’ve researched a lot of Facebook integration plugins and have decided that WPMU DEV’s Ultimate Facebook is the best. It’s one plugin that does it all, including importing Facebook comments into WordPress comments.

The plugin has a nice “Override WordPress discussion settings” checkbox, but it doesn’t immediately work with PageLines. There’s one extra step.

Step by Step

I’ll give you the step by step screenshots for your quick reference:

Step 1

After installing and setting up the Ultimate Facebook plugin, check the “Override WordPress discussion settings” box.

Ultimate Facebook - only use Facebook Comments

Step 2

Assuming you’re already using a child theme (if not, you need to for this and other benefits), copy the parent theme’s comments.php into your child theme folder:

Step 3

Comment out the first 2 lines of PHP code in your child theme’s comments.php file.

Ordering of Comments

Following the steps above will:

  1. Display your existing WordPress comments
  2. Then display your Facebook comments
  3. Then display the Facebook comment form

If you want the Facebook comments and comment form displayed before/above the WordPress comments, go into your Ultimate Facebook settings –> Facebook Comments –> Use a custom hook (advanced) –> and enter comments_template

Show Ultimate Facebook comments above WordPress comments

Final Thoughts

Personally, I like Facebook Comments because it cuts down on spammers (assuming you also turn off the WordPress Comments, as discussed above) and because it has a more inviting feel to it. However, if you don’t want just Facebook Comments, you can just not check that box in Step 1.
